As the district continue to report increased cases of child abuse and school dropouts among learners especially girls, Umunthu Plus engaged duty bearers to understand their roles on the issues.
Over one thousand learners especially girls from schools under Thale educational zone in Nkhotakota district are said to have dropped out of school for marriages and other due to pregnancies. This is as a result of harmful cultural practices, lack of interest in school and sexual relationships the learners have been indulging in.

Umunthu Plus with duty bearers in Nkhotakota district
In view of this, Umunthu Plus in collaboration with the district social welfare office held an engagement meeting with duty bearers such as chiefs surrounding the zone and school authorities to brainstorm and discuss how they can act on the issue.
School authorities asked for role modeling sessions as one way of motivating the girl-learners to focus on school and chiefs proposed for formulation and implementation of by-laws.
