A Journey to Gender Justice and Family Harmony-reflection story from Christina Mhone

After attending the recent Gender Justice Awareness Campaign in the Traditional Authority Kafuzira in Nkhotakota district, Christina Mhone’s perspective on family, education, and community changed profoundly.

“Today, we have learned about gender justice and violence against children, men, and women, and these lessons have truly benefited me. Sometimes, we unknowingly take away someone’s rights, even our own children, by using harsh words or calling them names. We often forget that every person deserves respect, regardless of age or status.”she said

Christina reflected on how the training opened her eyes to the many forms of abuse that can happen within a household.

“I realized that even denying my husband his marital rights without reason, or withholding school fees from my child, is a form of abuse. Abuse comes in many shapes—physical, emotional, and even economic. I now understand that love and understanding should guide our families, not violence or neglect.”

She further recounted a personal experience with her child’s education. “There was a time my child, who used to be among the top in class, suddenly dropped to position 14. When I asked the teacher, I was told it was because I hadn’t given gifts to the teachers. This, too, is a form of abuse—it discourages children and can make them feel unwanted or unfairly treated.”

Christina now feels empowered to take action: “I have learned to follow proper channels. If I encounter such issues again, I will speak to the headteacher, and if necessary, go to the education office or social welfare. I want justice and fairness for my children and all children in our community.”

She also sees herself as an advocate for change, especially for girls who have dropped out of school.

“There are many girls who have become young mothers and left school. I am now committed to encouraging them to return to school, whether they are girls or boys. We must not promote early marriages but support education for all.”

Christina’s story is a testament to the power of awareness and education. Through the campaign, she has become a champion for gender justice, family harmony, and the right to education—proving that real change begins with understanding and courage to act.
